My reaction to Editor Joe Ayres’s decision to publish this piece, despite my recommendation as a reviewer to reject it, was a disconcerting mix of surprise and pleasure. (p. 229)

The main reason that I recommended rejection of “A Critical Life” was that there was no fit between the piece and the social science criteria (i.e., Communication Education’s criteria) for assessing it. (pp. 229–230)

Autoethnography is not a “method” in the sanctioned way that we speak of method in the discipline. It is neither methodical nor systematic, purposefully, and thus it cannot be evaluated by our mainstream paradigm criteria. (p. 230)

Because of Ron’s autoethnography, I will think about criticizing and being criticized with new attention to these acts, with aroused awareness of their consequence. (p. 231)

With respect to autoethnography, in general, and to Ron’s work, in particular, Ragan’s (2000) essay is a mixed bag; she is unclear as to the merit of the work or the method, yet she still finds the piece pedagogical, informing her life as a researcher and teacher. Banks and Banks (2000) are more overtly positive:
